As an educator at the John Marshall School of Civic and Business Leadership, I am responsible for cultivating young leaders, and helping them to develop the skills necessary to become innovators and world changers. We focus on management skills, how to be a good employee, business communication and interpersonal skills, research and strategy, computer literacy and collaboration. We emphasize the importance of building lasting relationships within the community through civic engagement, as well as with business contacts. It is our goal to graduate young entrepreneurs who are ready to be emerged in relevant business opportunities.
In my classes, we focus on writing, literature and communication. Students read a variety of fiction and non-fiction material and are challenged to think outside of the words on the page, and to look for not only a deeper personal meaning, but also a bigger picture application. In journalism, we explore careers in this field, look at ethics and examine what makes something newsworthy. Students write and publish their own work and make connections between their own environment to society as a whole. Throughout the curriculum, I stress the importance of being able to professionally communicate orally and in writing to be able to best present themselves in civic and business opportunities.
