WKYC-TV has awarded 10 of CMSD’s K-8 schools equipment that will collect weather data and help students learn about forces at work in the atmosphere.
And the Official Weather Warriors are....
The schools, which were named winners in the station’s Weather Warriors contest, are Almira, Campus International, Charles Dickens, Clara E. Westropp, Denison, Iowa-Maple, Luis Muñoz Marin, Oliver H. Perry, Riverside and Willson.
Each school will receive a 6250 Davis Vantage Vue
wireless weather station that will be mounted atop the school.
Riverside Principal Paige Baublitz-Watkins said she looks forward to using the weather station as a teaching tool across all grade levels. She will scan subjects beyond science to find “weather connections” – for example, the applications that weather patterns and trends might hold for math.
The hands-on experience of analyzing weather data and learning about atmospheric conditions will broaden horizons for students at Almira, Principal Laverne Hooks said.
“We could be looking at future meteorologists or even astronauts,” she said. “Who knows?”
The schools were picked after submitting videos based on the theme: “We are the Weather Warriors.” (Find the entries here.
Besides trying their hands at weather forecasts, students will get to work one on one with members of the WKYC weather team, including chief meteorologist Betsy Kling and meteorologist Gregg Dee; visit the WKYC studio; and receive visits from the station’s Weather Advance Mobile Unit.
