CMSD taking applications for charter sponsorship
CMSD NEWS BUREAU
10/31/2014
CMSD has begun another round of applications for charter schools that want to be sponsored by the District.
An online application may be found here. The deadline for filing notice of intent to apply is Nov. 15 and the deadline for applying is 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 15.
The Cleveland Plan, a customized blueprint for education reform, calls for CMSD to operate a "portfolio" of schools and give every child in the city access to a quality education, regardless of the provider.
CMSD serves as the state-required sponsor for eight charter schools, providing oversight and technical assistance, and has partnerships with six other charters. Under The Cleveland Plan, sponsored and partner charters share 1 mill of a 15-mill operating levy that voters approved in 2012.
Charters also can work with CMSD by joining a compact funded by Bill and Melinda Gates. The Cleveland compact and others like it work together to turn around low-performing schools, improve services to special-education students and expand charters’ access to District buildings.
CMSD held an informational session about the application process on November 7, 2014. To learn more about that session, please see this PowerPoint.
The District plans to interview applicants in January, and a team will make recommendations to the Board of Education in February. If a charter school is accepted, the board and school would sign a preliminary agreement.
