Willson, located at 1126 Ansel Road, was the only school in Ohio to be honored this year by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The list includes 461 schools from 26 states and the District of Columbia.
The Alliance gave Willson a Bronze Award. The highest award is Gold, followed by Silver and Bronze.
Schools are judged based on health and safety policies and environment, health and physical education, other physical activity programs, nutrition services, health promotion for staff and family and community involvement.
Willson’s many efforts to promote health and wellness include monthly food distributions, opening a fitness center, a mindfulness program for students, a dance residency that focuses on movement and before and after school Play 60 programs that encourages physical activity.
The school is starting a community garden. The garden will produce vegetables that students can take home.
The Health School program has honored a number of CMSD schools in past years. In 2016, Garrett Morgan High School became the first school in Ohio to ever win a Gold Award.
