Facilities Department holds graduation for skills training program

CMSD held a graduation ceremony last week for 27 employees who completed an internal training program that could help them advance in their careers.

The new Facilities Department's Professional Growth Opportunities Program certified truck drivers, food-service employees, cleaners and others in skills needed to be considered for higher-level positions.

Nicholas Jackson, deputy chief of business operations, proposed the program to Chief Executive Officer Eric Gordon. The employees completed the courses on their own time. Lead instructor Duane Gibson and the other instructors, Steve Doggett and Jesse Dudas, volunteered their time.

At the end of the ceremony, held Thursday at the Barbara Byrd-Bennett Professional Development Center, Gordon had all the graduates stand and reach high into the air. Then he gave them a command that they were to follow without thinking: "Reach higher."

"Don't let anyone say you can't reach higher," he said after they complied.
