AFT leader views career-tech reform (video)
11/23/2015 -- American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten visited Cleveland on Monday to see how the District is changing career and technical education to meet the needs of students and the modern work force. Escorted by leaders of the AFT-affiliated Cleveland Teachers Union, Weingarten toured Max S. Hayes High School's new state-of-the-art building on West 65th Street. She spoke with instructors and students in classes that included computer numerical control machining, automobile technology and building and construction.

Black box theater debuts with "Twilight" (video)
11/20/2015 -- The Cleveland School of the Arts will inaugurate the school's new black box theater with a powerful production based on the riots that racked Los Angeles in 1992 and the aftermath of that turmoil. "Twilight: Los Angeles 1992" was written and originally performed as a one-woman play by actress, playwright and professor Anna Deavere Smith. It is based on interviews conducted in Los Angeles after the riots.

Committees to help shape new small schools
11/20/2015 -- A broad cross-section of the community came together this week to begin shaping a vision for three new small CMSD high schools. Parents, teachers, students and alumni, elected officials, representatives of business and nonprofit organizations – about 60 people in all – make up the advisory committees that will draft guiding principles for new educational designs at James F. Rhodes and Lincoln-West high schools.

Inspiring CMSD grad addresses STEM leaders
11/12/2015 -- The STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice conference brought together Cleveland and 26 other communities, part of a pilot group that the national STEM Funders Network announced in September. David Boone, who overcame homelessness to graduate from Cleveland's MC2STEM High School and is a now a senior at Harvard University, spoke to the gathering Wednesday

Schools usher students through college admissions maze
11/11/2015 -- Rhodes is among 10 high schools where CMSD and partners walk side by side with students as they select institutions, apply for admission and secure financial aid. Wednesday was College Application Day at Rhodes, with time set aside for seniors to complete online admission applications in the media center.

PRE4CLE salutes more "early adopters"

Small schools planned for Lincoln-West, Rhodes
11/4/2015 -- Three new small high schools, the latest in a series being developed by CMSD, will open next fall. Teams representing the District and community will spend the year planning the new designs with the help of $3 million in philanthropic support from Carnegie Corporation of New York. The grant also includes support for implementing the plans to help ensure a successful rollout.
