Washington Park senior named Boys & Girls Clubs' Ohio Youth of the Year
3/27/2018 -- Tamara Thomas won the state competition last weekend at a conference of the Boys & Girls Clubs' Michigan-Ohio Area Council in Southfield, Mich., and was previously named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland Youth of the Year on March 9. She now moves to regional competition, scheduled for July 17 in Chicago, and if successful there, to national competition in September in Washington, D.C.

CSA hosts Heritage Ball to unite cultures
3/29/2018 -- The Cleveland School of the Arts will host a Heritage Ball, an event designed to bridge cultures during a time of nationwide racial and ethnic tension. The ball, open to all District students and their guests, is scheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 at CSA.

Board helps advance Say Yes bid
3/21/2018 -- The Cleveland Board of Education has taken a preliminary but important action that helps advance the city’s bid to become the nation’s fourth chapter of Say Yes to Education. Say Yes chapters provide scholarships that high school graduates use to fill gaps in college tuition. But more importantly, the chapters coordinate community academic and social services that keep students on track to high school graduation, college or post-secondary education and careers.

Six more preschools earn top rating
3/21/2018 -- Six preschool sites – at Case, Hannah Gibbons, Mary M. Bethune, Nathan Hale and Patrick Henry schools and Douglas MacArthur Girls' Leadership Academy – have just received the maximum five stars from Ohio’s Step Up to Quality program. All 45 rated sites have earned five stars, and the rest are or will go through the evaluation process.

Industry volunteers sought to help teach computer science
3/15/2018 -- TEALS, which stands for Technology Education and Literacy in Schools, recruits industry professionals to assist classroom teachers, preparing them to eventually handle introductory and Advanced Placement courses on their own. Funded by Microsoft Philanthropies, the nationwide initiative seeks to expand access to computer science for all students, including female, black and Latino students who are underrepresented in the field.

Conference to showcase CMSD engagement
3/14/2018 -- More than 1,300 visitors from across the United States are expected to gather in Cleveland in July for the fifth annual National Family and Community Engagement Conference. The conference, hosted by the Institute for Educational Leadership, will draw school district leaders, other educators, families and students who will meet July 11-13 at the downtown Huntington Convention Center.

3/9/2018 -- Tamara Thomas, a senior at Washington Park Environmental Studies, has been named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland’s Youth of the Year. Second place went to Mercedes Klouda, a senior at the Cleveland School of Architecture and Design at the John Hay Campus, while Danesha McKinney, a junior at Jane Addams Business Careers Center, finished third.

CMSD students to be tested for lead poisoning
3/8/2018 -- Starting in April, students ages 3 to 6 at four schools will be screened by Case Western Reserve University nursing students. The pilot program is expected to expand to the entire District over two years.
