A packed house cheered the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday -- for renovating the media center at H. Barbara Booker School.
The Cavaliers teamed up with Sherwin-Williams to paint, put down new flooring, install computers and decorate a room that is known as a "reading and learning center." It was the Cavs' 26th "legacy project" in the Cleveland area.
Several years ago, CMSD spruced up H. Barbara Booker's hub, an open gathering area surrounded by classrooms, giving the West 67th Street school a new feel. The media center makeover adds a special extra touch, Principal Nicholas Scheibelhood said.
"One girl told me, 'It's the nicest thing I've ever seen. Another told me, 'This is how I want my room,' " he said after a ribbon-cutting ceremony. "That's huge. It makes them feel valuable."
Mayor Frank G. Jackson and Cavaliers Chief Executive Officer Len Komoroski celebrated the project with retired Cavs Campy Russell and Elmore Smith, The Q announcer Ahmaad Crump, Cavs cheerleaders and mascot Sir CC.
Before the ceremony Crump coaxed some some students into showing off their dance moves. Afterward, Russell and Smith sat with students in the media center and played board games.
"This space is yours," Crump told students gathered in the hub. "Take pride in it. Use it all the time."
