Cyber Security – Safeguarding Against Unauthorized Access
Cyber attackers often use misleading emails with embedded links to steal data and damage networks. To protect ourselves, we must remain vigilant and take steps to protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. Cyber security is the shared responsibility of every District employee. We all play a key role in properly safeguarding sensitive information. The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) cyber security awareness and training program helps to educate district employees and students about the many potential information technology threats and vulnerabilities. The program informs staff and students about the policies and procedures for the acceptable use of technology within the district while providing us with steps we can take to assist the district with the protection of information, privacy, and data systems.
The following Dos and Don’ts help remind us of the actions we must take to remain vigilant.
- DO use hard-to-guess passwords or passphrases.
- DO use different passwords for different accounts.
- DO use privacy settings on social media sites to restrict access to your personal information.
- DO pay attention to phishing traps in email and watch for telltale signs of a scam.
- DO destroy information properly when it is no longer needed.
- DO be aware of your surroundings when printing, copying, faxing or discussing sensitive information.
- DO lock your computer and mobile phone when not in use.
- DO remember that wireless is inherently insecure.
- DON’T leave printouts or portable media containing private information on your desk.
- DON’T post any private or sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, passwords or other private information, on public sites, including social media sites.
- DON’T send it through email unless authorized to do so.
- DON’T open mail or attachments from an untrusted source.
- DON’T click on links from an unknown or untrusted source.
- DON’T be tricked into giving away confidential information.
- DON’T respond to phone calls or emails requesting confidential data.
- DON’T install unauthorized programs on your work computer.
- DON’T plug in portable devices without permission from the CMSD Department of Information Technology.
- DON’T leave devices unattended.
- DON’T leave wireless or Bluetooth turned on when planning to use and only in a safe environment.

Remember - cyber security is everyone’s responsibility!

What's Coming
Workday Expense Report Enhancements Delayed until March 2019
In the August issue of the newsletter we reported that effective September 8th, significant enhancements will be made to the Workday expense report experience for the desktop application and minor enhancements will be made to the mobile application. Workday has decided to delay the expense report enhancement until the Workday Release 32 in March 2019. This delay gives Workday clients more time to review, understand, and communicate the enhancements before they are implemented. More information will be shared as we get closer to the effective date of the change.
