  • What's All the Buzz About?

Posted by Jacqueline Vance on 5/4/2020

Do you know how important bees are for flowering plants in the spring and agriculture?

"Honeybees and native bees are an integral part of the pollination system, responsible for successful seeding of more than 90% of all flowering plants, and for fruiting of 30% of our food."

    Source: https://beebuilt.com/pages/beekeeping-for-beginners

Bee's jobs are so important, not only for the production of their delicious honey, but also for our crops and beautiful lanscapes.

This year in social studies we learned about what makes a community and how communities were developed in the past. We also learned about social caste systems, and how different levels of the system have different responsibilities working together to function as a whole. Bees work together in a similar way. "Honeybees have three social castes, each with a specific role or set of roles that divide all of the labor inside a colony. The colony is made up of thousands of individuals functioning as a whole." -beekeeping for beginners source.

During this time of a pandemic and regulated closures, we can learn something from the bees. Bees know that if they do not work together, they cannot successfully build their community and survive. Although we are distancing ourselves physically from others, we can still support each other remotely to keep a strong school community!

During our extended break, Mr. Steinbrenner has been harvesting honey in his very own Beehive!

Shout out to Mr. Steinbrenner for making a difference in the bee culture and giving the bees a safe place to harvest honey and pollinate our plants!

  • Engage with NASA at home

Posted by Jacqueline Vance on 4/20/2020

    Happy Monday 6th grade!

Have you heard of NASA? Do you know what NASA does? Do you know what kind of engineers and scientists work at NASA?

    https://www.nasa.gov/stem-at-home-for-students-5-8.html

Chek out this resource Ms. Pittard shared with me that I think is awesome!

They have plenty of activities and simulations you can play to learn about the work done at NASA. You'll learn about concepts of flight, what it's like to be an astronaunt, and how to use the engineering design process to build your own aircrafts.

This year in science we learned about energy and how different forms of energy and sources of energy are used to power things. Connect your learning to real life by seeing how these concepts are used by the people who work at NASA.

ANNOUCEMENT: STARTING THIS WEEK ALL LEARNING PACKETS WILL BE MAILED HOME BY THE DISTRICT, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO VISIT A FOOD SITE TO RETRIEVE A LEARNING PACKET.

REMEMBER TO KEEP WORKING ON MATH AND READING EVERYDAY. WHETHER YOU ARE UTILIZING THE PACKET OR SUPPLEMENTING ONLINE RESOURCES, MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING AN ACCOUNT MADE BY YOUR TEACHER SO WE CAN HELP YOU AS NEEDED.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE A KHAN ACADEMY ACCOUNT, MESSAGE MS. VANCE IN THE REMIND APP.

  • TinkerCAD Challenge #2

Posted by Jacqueline Vance on 4/15/2020

    Tinkercad challenge #2

Design your own playground demonstrating your knowledge of energy transformations.

    Example:

Potential energy to kinetic energy = Slide with a ladder. The child would gain potential energy as they climb the ladder and it would transform to kinetic energy as they slide down the slide.

    Constraints to follow:

-Must have at least 5 different energy transformations present on playground

-Transformations must be clear (you can use the 'text' feature to label the transformation or create a list off to the side)

THIS IS DUE NEXT FRIDAY APRIL 24th!!!

The winner of the challenge will have their playground 3D printed!

If you have any questions, message me in the remind app.
