To volunteer as a coach support, you must have completed the following steps:
Step #1: Please ask the School Principal of the building you wish to serve to confirm via email with the district Manager of Volunteers your service at this building. Email to: Judith.lozada@clevelandmetroschools.org.

Step #2: FIRST AID FOR COACHES Permit holders fulfill this requirement through ONE of the following four options:
- Ohio Department of Education-approved pupil activity program:
- Search for a program here.
- Districts may verify completion of training by clicking on the Pupil Activity link on the CORE Dashboard and choosing the Find Participants drop-down menu.
- Nationally approved programs:
- National Federation of State High School Associations & American Red Cross:
- Human Kinetics Coach Education Center
- American Heart Association
- First Aid course
- Online training verification is not available.
- College or university courses:
- Courses must be completed within the past three years and be related to first aid or athletic training.
- Online training verification is not available.
- Medical licenses
- The licenses MD, DO, DC, PA, RN, EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, ATC and SCS fulfill the first aid training requirements (permit holder’s board license must be active).
- Districts may verify Ohio board licenses online here.
Step #3: Concussion Management Certification:
Permit holders must complete ONE of the following free, online trainings every three years. Please see the Ohio Department of Health’s website for additional resources and information.

- National Alliance for Youth Sports Concussion Training
• “Concussion Training”

Step #4: SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST TRAINING
- Permit holders must review the online video and related fact sheet approved by the Ohio Department of Health annually.

- To confirm you have read and understood the online training and reviewed the law please sign and have your school Principal and Athletic Coach sign HERE.
Step #5: Current FBI/BCI,
The security check must be registered with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), provided through the Department of Safety and Security, East Professional Center, 1349 E. 79th Street. Cost: $47.25.

- If you are a certificated teacher, your background check is renewed along with your teacher certificate.
- If you are a current CMSD staff member, please provide us with your staff ID #.
- For all others, your background check must be done within the same year that you are applying to volunteer.
