Scholarship luncheon set for Aug. 1

Tickets are still available for a luncheon that raises money to provide scholarships to graduating CMSD seniors.

The seventh annual Army of Believers luncheon is scheduled for noon on Friday, Aug. 1 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Proceeds will fund one-time, $5,000 scholarships.

This year, 13 graduates, chosen from among 104 applicants, received scholarships based on academic records or overall contributions to the community, recommendations, an essay and an interview. The Eaton Corp. funded five of the scholarships.

Army of Believers scholarships fill critical gaps for students who might be the first in their families to attend college, said CMSD’s Shirrell Greene, chair of the Army of Believers committee.

“You’re touching lives,” she said. “This is really what you want to see for every kid.”

William T. Hiller, executive director of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, and David J. LaRue, president and chief executive officer of Forest City Enterprises, are honorary co-chairs of this year’s luncheon. Felton Thomas Jr., executive director and chief executive officer of the Cleveland Public Library, will speak.

Five “five-star generals” will be honored for service to the community: the Abington Foundation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland, MetroHealth System, the United Way of Greater Cleveland and the late Arnold R. Pinkney. Pinkney, a nationally known civil rights leader, former Cleveland school board member and longtime District advocate, died in January at the age of 83.

Tickets are priced at four levels:

• Four-star general, $5,000, which entitles the buyer to VIP seating for 10, prominent recognition at the luncheon and in the event program and a name and logo in the program.

• Three-star general, $3,500, preferred seating for five and name and logo in the program.

• Two-star general, $1,500, preferred seating for two and name in the program.

• One-star general, $100, a ticket for one.
