Applications taken for open school board seat
CMSD NEWS BUREAU
5/1/2022
The City of Cleveland is accepting applications for an open seat on the Board of Education.
Mayor Justin Bibb will appoint a new board member to complete a term that expires June 30, 2023. The seat was vacated when Jasmine Fryer resigned last August.
Under state law, Cleveland's mayor appoints the nine members of the Cleveland school board. Board members serve without pay.
Residents of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District are eligible to serve on the board, though state law prohibits District employees and elected officials from holding the office.
The mayor will pick from among candidates selected by an 11-member nominating panel.
A school parent organization appoints three CMSD parents or guardians to the panel, and the mayor appoints three. The following each select one member: the City Council president, a representative of the Cleveland Teachers Union, District principals and the business community. The state schools superintendent appoints a president of a public or private institution of higher education.
The deadline to apply is May 20. Go here to fill out and submit the application.
Applicants can also print out and complete the form and drop it off at City Hall or mail it to:
