The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd is momentous, but the nation still needs to confront the continuing problem of racial injustice, CEO Eric Gordon says in an open letter to the community.

“Today’s verdict defines a profound moment in our country,” the CEO wrote after the jury’s decision was announced. “We must use this moment to critically examine the systems and structures in communities across this nation and in our own community in Cleveland, and challenge ourselves again to address the longstanding inequities that together form the public health crisis of racism and racial injustice.”

Gordon also reacted strongly after Floyd’s death, saying that everyone is either part of the solution or part of the problem. “What we do or don’t do today will truly determine whether George Floyd’s life and the lives of so many others will be honored,” he wrote after the jury convicted Chauvin on all charges.
