Greetings CMSD Families and Friends,
We measure progress by positive student outcomes and increased efficiencies in the delivery of instruction and operational services. To that end, the District is closing out the 2023-2024 school year on a high note. It brings me great joy to recognize the academic achievement of our own Chardon J. Black Jr., one of the nation’s elite high school scholars. Last month, Chardon learned he had been named a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of just 161 seniors nationwide to receive that honor. Chardon is the first CMSD graduate in recent memory to be awarded this scholarly distinction and may be the first in the District’s history. A graduating senior at Cleveland School of Science & Medicine, Chardon plans to enroll at Princeton University in the fall. He intends to major in political science. In addition to being an academic superstar, Chardon prides himself on his service as a mentor, an undertaking he credits to his parental upbringing. On a separate District front, we can also celebrate the recently ratified collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the District and the Cleveland Teachers Union. The process was challenging but gratifying. Of special note in the new contract is an agreement by teachers to transition to a virtual grade book. The grade book will be an extremely useful tool, allowing greater transparency between parents, guardians, and teachers. Parents have long advocated for greater access and timely communication about their child’s grades and classroom performance. The electronic grade book represents a significant step in that direction. Next school year, the District will also roll out a new policy regarding the collection and storage of students’ cell phones during the school day. The policy will reduce classroom distractions for scholars and educators and make schools safer by reducing bullying and lessening student anxiety. I am optimistic about the impact both policies will have on student learning and outcomes.
In the final weeks of the academic year, and as I conclude my first year as CEO, I continue to be blown away by our District's accomplishments and untapped potential. It is my pleasure to continue sharing this incredible journey with you.
Yours In Gratitude,
