The College Board has honored five CMSD high schools for their efforts to involve more female students in the study of computer science, a field where women are severely underrepresented.

Schools receiving the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for the 2018-19 academic year include the Cleveland School of Architecture and Design, Cleveland School of Science and Medicine, Cleveland High School for Digital Arts, Garrett Morgan and Lincoln-West School of Global Studies.

The award recognizes private, traditional public and charter schools where female students make up at least half of the enrollment in Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A, or where the percentage of female students taking AP tests exceeds the school’s level of female enrollment.

According to the College Board, 20,000 institutions worldwide offer Advanced Placement courses. Only 818 schools in the in the world – and just 17 in Ohio -- earned the award.

The Lincoln-West School of Global Studies has a "very intentional strategy" for recruiting and retaining students in AP classes, Principal Irene Javier said.

"We believe in access for everyone and in supporting students as they make academic programming choices that will lead them to career success," she said.

The John Marshall School of Information Technology and the Cleveland School of Science and Medicine won the award for the 2017-18 school year.

The College Board is a nonprofit group that seeks to prepare students for success.
