Two CMSD high schools are among 14 in Ohio honored for helping to close the gender gap in Advanced Placement computer science courses.

The Cleveland School of Science and Medicine and John Marshall School of Information Technology received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from the College Board, a not-for-profit organization that helps prepare students for success in college. CSSM and John Marshall IT the only urban schools in Ohio to earn the distinction.

The award recognizes schools where female students make up at least half of the enrollment in AP Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A or where the percentage of female students taking AP tests exceeds the school’s level of female enrollment. CSSM and John Marshall IT both reached the goals in Computer Science Principles.

According to the College Board, more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide offer the AP courses, but only 685 qualify for the award.
