Students from more than a dozen high schools gathered recently at Windows on the River to talk about how they made a difference this school year.
They were part of Civics 2.0, a new program in which students not only learned about civics and the importance of having a voice when it comes to politics and other civic matters, they also took action.
During this learning demonstration, the students shared projects they had completed, including the following.
- Registering nearly 100 voters through voter registration drives at their schools
- 61 students worked at the polls on Election Day
- Collinwood High School students held a Cleveland mayoral candidate forum days before the November election.
- Students spoke at the Board of Education meeting to address concerns in their schools.
- YMCA Youth and Government three-day Conference in Columbus, where they learned to write bills.
- Students at Glenville wrote and produced a song that was runner-up in the Maltz Museum’s Stop the Hate Youth Sing Out contest.
- The Unsilenced Voices Podcast.
- They participated in a Media Day
- Students met influential people including Russ Feingold, a former U.S. senator from Wisconsin.
Gayle Gadison, the District's Curriculum and Instruction Manager for Social Studies, says this year was a success and plans to offer Civics 2.0 to eighth graders next school year.
