Eugene T.W. Sanders, Ph.D. 2006-2011

Eugene Sanders Ph.D.   Dr. Sanders began his duties as CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, July 1, 2006 after Barbara Byrd-Bennett’s departure. Prior to coming to Cleveland, Dr. Sanders headed the Toledo school district for six years, taking that district’s graduation rate from 55 percent to 80 percent. He was chosen after a nationwide search. Immediately after his arrival, Dr. Sanders embarked on a mission of guiding the state’s largest school district toward greater academic progress. He appointed key staff leaders, reviewed the District’s organizational chart and from there realigned staff, streamlining the organization for greater efficiency and productivity. Sanders initiated a five-year Strategic Plan designed to move the District to Continuous Improvement or higher. He also created the District’s goal of moving the District to … “Become a premier school district in the United States of America”. In 2010, he appeared nationally on MSNBC’s “Education Nation” programming initiative. Dr. Sanders is an author of a textbook on urban school leadership and has written scholarly articles on achievement and organizational improvement in schools. He is a native of Sandusky, Ohio and a graduate of Bowling Green State University.
