Board approves teachers contract

The Cleveland Board of Education voted Tuesday to approve a new three-year contract with the Cleveland Teachers Union, an agreement reached after more than a year of negotiations.
The union previously approved the contract with an 86 percent yes vote.
Chief Executive Officer Eric Gordon said he was pleased to bring a contract to the board that people on both sides of the bargaining table viewed as fair.
“We have a contract that represents, at its heart, what’s best for kids,” said Gordon. “We look forward now to redirecting our focus toward our common goal to help every one of them succeed.”
Board Chair Anne Bingham said the board was grateful that an agreement was reached without eroding reforms vital to continuing CMSD’s progress under The Cleveland Plan.
The contract, retroactive to July 1, 2016, will expire at the end of the 2018-19 school year. It includes 2 percent pay raises for this school year and 2.75 percent in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.
