CMSD’S Davis Aerospace & Maritime High School will supply the first team in what the team’s sponsor hopes will become a statewide interscholastic drone racing association.

PHASTAR Corp. a nonprofit that developed the Davis Aerospace & Maritime concept and partners with the school, has raised $25,000 in seed money for the association. PHASTAR has earmarked $8,000 for start-up costs that include hiring a drone expert and part-time event planner. Another $1,500 will pay for sponsoring the Davis team.

The association will focus first on attracting teams from schools in Cuyahoga County and eventually statewide. An organizational meeting is to be scheduled for early summer.

Davis A&M, which opened downtown on Lakeside Avenue last year, teaches science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM education, with a focus on the aerospace and maritime industries. PHASTAR’s goal in starting the association is to “bring STEM education to life in the fun and competitive atmosphere.”
