The deadline to apply for an open seat on the Cleveland Board of Education has been extended three weeks to Sept. 13.

The seat was vacated when Jasmine Fryer resigned, effective Aug. 1. Fryer purchased another home that is in Cleveland but is in a portion of the city that is part of the Shaker Heights School District.

The mayor will appoint a successor to fill the rest of Fryer’s term, which will expire June 30, 2023. By state law, the mayor appoints the Cleveland board's nine members, who serve without pay.

District residents are eligible. The application may be found here in English and here in Spanish. Hard copies are available at city neighborhood resource and recreation centers.

Applications may be submitted in person or mailed to the CMSD Nominating Panel at Cleveland City Hall, 601 Lakeside Avenue, Room 227, Cleveland, Ohio 44114, attention Dr. Monyka Price, or emailed to mprice@clevelandohio.gov.

In her resignation letter, Fryer called serving on the board a highlight of her personal and professional life.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in this capacity and hope to continue service for the scholars, parents, and families of Cleveland in other ways,” she wrote.
