With cases of COVID-19 rising in the community, CMSD will extend its universal mask requirement at least through October, CEO Eric Gordon announced Tuesday.
The requirement and other precautions proved to be effective, the CEO said. Student and staff cases are being reported to the CMSD hotline, but in a District spanning 90 campuses, only one case is known to have been transmitted in school.
“While the virus is spreading in our community, it is not spreading in our schools,” he said in a message sent to students, families and staff by phone, email and a video posted on social media.
CMSD requires all students, staff and visitors, vaccinated or unvaccinated, to wear masks in schools. The District also practices social distancing, requires temperature checks, provides frequent opportunities for sanitizing and operates care clinics in schools.
Students returned this school year to in-person education five days a week. Gordon said students learn best in school, “and we are going to do everything in our power to keep them there.”
The CEO emphasized the positive steps the District is taking to build on a decade of progress under The Cleveland Plan.
Under a new vision of learning, CMSD seeks to create a system that is “more fair, just and good” for all learners. Initial steps include placing a healthcare professional in every building while also expanding arts, music and physical education, strengthening interscholastic sports and other extracurricular activities and converting libraries and media centers into community, college and career planning hubs.
