New Tech West students are learning the art of photography during a new after-school program.
Once a week at the end of the school day, eight students, art teacher Dina Hoenyck and a guest teacher from The Cleveland Print Room meet to talk about photography and edit pictures.
“It is really nice that we have this quiet time together after school where it is just our small group and we can spend a lot of one-on-one time or small group time going deeper into the content,” said Hoenyck.
Hoenyck received $15,000 from the District’s Innovative learning Accelerator grant program. The grants help bring CMSD’s new vision for learning to life by creating student-driven projects and engaging scholars in clubs or activities that promote a joyful and adventurous environment. Students will also showcase their projects in demonstrations of learning.
Hoenyck used the grant money to purchase 8 digital cameras and equipment. The students get to take the cameras home and take pictures in their free time.
Rokhsar, a tenth grader, took some pictures when she traveled to New York.
“Photography is one of my favorites,” she said. “I love taking pictures of things and editing them.”
Rokhsar admits she didn’t know how to use a camera before this after-school program. She took pictures only on her phone. Hoenyck says that is why she wants to expose her students this craft.
As a part of the program these students will have the opportunity to display and sell their prints this weekend during The Cleveland Print Room’s Open House.
The open house hours are as follows: Friday, December 3, from 12- 7pm, Saturday, December 4, from 10am-6pm and Sunday, December 5 from 11am- 5pm.
