Two new CMSD Employee Resource Groups focused on diversity and inclusivity will have a kickoff event on Thursday, September 28th at the Great Lakes Science Center.

Proud @ CMSD and WEw (women empower women) were both created in the 2023-24 school year to bolster efforts already underway in the district to continue the evolution of a more inclusive workplace.

The newly created groups will join MOCHA (Men of Color sHaping Academics), bringing to three the number of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which are comprised of and led by CMSD staff who have some shared identifiers, characteristics, backgrounds, or are allies of the group.

"We are excited to have expanded connections and supports for our educators through our Employee Resource Groups this year," said Stephen Christian, Interim Chief Talent & Equity Officer.

"Experiencing connection, encouragement, and support is essential for our educators, both in sustaining us through day-to-day needs, as well as towards career growth and future opportunities. These groups will be uplifting and impactful. We are grateful for the path our MOCHA group has modeled and the leadership our educators have demonstrated in making Women Empower Women and Proud @ CMSD possible," Christian added.

Proud @ CMSD provides and promotes LGBTQ+visibility among employees about current workplace and social issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community. Through networking and educational outreach, PROUD endeavors to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ employees while maintaining diversity in thought and ideas across the organization. All CMSD employees – LGBTQ+ and allies – are welcome to join and support Proud.

The mission of WEq is to embrace womanhood, to connect and empower women with the skills to thrive and grow in their career and professional learning community.

MOCHA, which has been around since 2018, endeavors to cultivate a thriving community of male educators of color, united in a shared commitment to educational excellence and equity.

The kickoff event, which will run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00, will provide an enjoyable space and fun time to connect with colleagues and friends and learn about initiatives underway in the district. Refreshments and Hors d‘oeuvres will be served. Free parking will be available in the Science Center attached garage.
