Chryslian Padro - New Tech West

Chryslian Notable: Graduated third in her high school class while also earning 48 credits and an A average at Cuyahoga Community College. Counselor Elaine Fourtounis was impressed with Chryslian’s ability to balance her academic load and other activities, calling Chryslian one of the most well-rounded students she has known.

High school resume: Was admitted to the Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college honor society.  Participated in Aspiring Doctors Program at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, peer mentoring and mediation. Interned at NASA. Played varsity volleyball all four years. Volunteered with the Board of Elections, Kids in Need Resource Center and Shoes and Coats for Kids.

Plans for the future: Attend Cleveland State University and major in nursing. Later go to medical school and become a doctor.

Challenges faced: Peer pressure to be lazy. Balancing high school and college courses (astronomy, psychology and American Sign Language) made senior year stressful.

Who besides Chryslian deserves the most credit for her success? An extremely supportive mother who encouraged Chryslian to chase her dream, as well as teachers, a counselor and a psychology professor who made sure she was doing OK, not just academically but in her personal life.

Quote: (On learning, as a first-generation college student with a language barrier in her home, to navigate the college application and admissions system.) It’s made me more independent. I’ll go into college having that. I know how to do stuff on my own.”
