What Civics 2.0 is like at Garret Morgan High School
By Kayden Ferris
Today, we will be interviewing a new Civics 2.0 member at Garrett Morgan - Marshawn Bailey, an 11th grader - to learn about the effects of the program. The portions in bold are Kayden's questions and the portions not in bold are student responses.
What is Civics 2.0 currently doing that impacts the community or the life of others?
Civics 2.0 helps to address issues that people face daily like gun violence, drug abuse, and any major issues that people talk about or that’s currently trending.
Do you feel like joining Civics 2.0 changed you for the better? If so, how?
It definitely has. It's made me a better leader and it's helped me build my communication skills to help communicate with others and solve problems.
What’s the benefit you have experienced working with Civics 2.0?
The benefits are basically learning communication and leadership skills.
What is the best thing you’ve done in Civics 2.0?
The best thing I've done was working with others to come up with laws to address issues, like limiting the driving age to 16 or making school lunches better for everyone.
Name important reasons why people should join Civics 2.0?
People should join civics if they want to become a better leader and make lives better, or to become a leader, and not a follower. They can also build better communications skills because you need communication to be able to get things done in life. If you don’t use your words, you cannot get anything done.
Has Civics 2.0 helped you become a better leader?
Yes, mainly because it helps me help others who need a helping hand and need it the most. A lot of people need help in the world and if people don’t get help, they are going to be stuck in the position they’re in for a long period of time.
Do you think Civics has brought you closer to people?
I feel like I isolate myself too much, and Civics 2.0 helps me communicate with my peers and build relationships for the future because we can still communicate outside of Civics.
Thank you for your answers. Today we learned about the huge impact Civics 2.0 has on our young leaders.
