Bass Boot Camp*

Ages:  13 and up

Bass Boot Camp is an intensive two-day workshop for electric bass and double bass, directed by Alfredo Guerrieri, one of the most in-demand bassists in Northeast Ohio! Students will be working on a variety of material, from technique and etudes, to harmonic material and genre-based grooves. At the completion of the boot camp, each bass player will have a better understanding of their instrument and overall musicianship.

Ages:  At least 6 but less than 12

Led by TMS EC Drama Specialist Mr. C, Camp Create is a nurturing and engaging introductory theater arts camp filled with fun, collaboration, and learning. Through collaboration, campers will create an original presentation to be performed on the final day of camp. This camp is geared for children with little to no performance experience and will foster creativity, confidence and caring by engaging students through theater games, activities, community building and performance.

Children must bring a nut-free lunch & water bottle daily.

Chamber Connect*

In this week-long chamber music experience, campers will collaborate in an ensemble, receive daily coaching, and attend instrument-specific technique classes. Campers will also participate in chamber music seminars, including "Intro to Improv" and "Busking 101." Camp will culminate on Friday with an early evening recital featuring our campers.

This camp is open to string, piano, and voice students in the intermediate to advanced levels. Video submission is recommended for ensemble placement. Please perform one major and one minor scale (2 or 3 octaves) and a piece that best demonstrates your musical and technical abilities (i.e. shifting, double stops, etc.). J@MS Jazz Camp*

Polish your music skills and discover the rich tradition of jazz music in this summer offering of our popular school year program, Jazz at The Music Settlement (J@MS). Campers will develop musical skills, perform in ensembles, and take classes in the history of African American music and jazz improvisation. There will be a wrap up performance on the last day of camp.

Kids Camp*

Location: Varies – see sessions below.

Fee: $215.00 per session

Ages:  At least 3 but less than 6

This half-day morning STEAM camp is led by TMS Early Childhood teachers. Each session is designed for preschool children to explore and engage in an arts & sciences-rich environment though hands-on exploration, games, outdoor activities, and arts and crafts. This camp runs concurrently with our full-day preschool program.

Toilet mastery is required. We are outside most of the day. Children must bring a nut-free lunch & water bottle from home daily.

Note: If your child was in Kindergarten this past year, Kindergarten Camp or Camp Create would be a better fit.

Let's Get Social (ASD)^

Let's Get Social is a group focused on creating a welcoming environment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to build their social skills with peers through social songs, playing instruments, singing, and listening to music.

Movers and Shakers^

This group is focused on developing, nurturing, and celebrating the bonds between parent and child. Through creating music together by singing, instrument playing, and rhythmic movement, this group is meant to bring parent and child closer in a fun, creative way.

Music Safari Camp*

Location: University Circle Campus

Music Safari Camp is an ideal setting for young children to be introduced to musical instruments. During this week of musical exploration, campers will engage with several families of instruments including strings, winds, brass, percussion, and keyboard. Campers will experience the instruments through hands-on learning and participate in musical games and crafts. This camp is a great opportunity to discover which instruments your camper connects with before investing in private instruction.  Previous musical experience is not required.

North Coast Winds Summer Institute*

Ages:  At least 11 but less than 19

Join the North Coast Winds, Cleveland's premier professional woodwind quintet, for an interactive and fun week of woodwind instruction and chamber music! Open to flute, oboe, B-flat clarinet, French horn, and bassoon students.

Students will learn and practice the basics of chamber music, rehearse and perform side-by-side with professional musicians in a chamber music immersion experience and perform in a recorded concert for family and friends at the end of the week. Other topics will include careers in music, basic ear training, music theory, sight singing, critical listening skills, and more!

Camp begins Sunday, June 12th from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm with an orientation and placements. On Friday, campers will present a livestreamed concert from the BOP STOP.

Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced levels, with at least two years of experience playing with a band or orchestra.

Piano Camp*

The theme of our 2022 Piano Camp is America the Beautiful. This two-week, half-day camp will present music by American composers covering over four centuries! Campers will learn the history of American music through biographies of the composers and listening to and playing their works. Piano Camp will also include sessions covering music theory, technique, keyboard instrument discovery, guided practice time, ensemble, and performance. Camp will conclude with a recital for friends and family on Friday, July 1, 2022 at 6:00pm.

Skill Level: Minimum of 2 years of private lessons or intermediate level

Rock & Pop Music Camp*

Rock & Pop Music Camp is a modern music experience that encompasses a wide variety of styles, including Classic Rock, Pop, Funk, Reggae, Grunge, and Blues. Campers will take part in a hands-on creative rock ensemble. Camp will include band rehearsal, music theory/history, ear training, and songwriting, culminating in an exciting and energetic live performance on Saturday at our BOP STOP performance venue.

Songwriting Boot Camp*

Ages:  At least 12 but less than 19

Spend a week learning the ins and outs of songwriting! Campers will learn popular music chord progressions and song forms, lyric writing, how to arrange songs and instrumentation, performance skill building, history of singer-songwriters, and get to experience a recording session as part of the final project. Instrumental proficiency is not required, but working knowledge of guitar, bass, or piano will be helpful. Campers will work with notable local singer-songwriters in fun, interactive, small and medium sized groups. The wrap-up project will be a recording session at our BOP STOP performance venue, where camp faculty and campers will record their original songs to keep as souvenirs of their camp experience.

Spirituals Camp*

Ages:  15 and up

The creation of generations of African Americans, spirituals are a type of religious folksong which merged African cultural heritage with the experience of enslavement. Spirituals uniquely tell the story of a resilient people working, playing, suffering, praying, and dreaming. TMS invites teens and adults to come learn the art of singing this important genre of American song. Participants will improve their own singing both through solo performance and group discussion.

Each participant should select and prepare two spirituals for the camp with contrasting tempos, ideally learned in advance. Singers will perform their selections at the BOP STOP on Friday for a livestreamed concert.  Skill level: Intermediate and above.

Summer Cello Boot Camp*

Ages:  12 and up

Summer Cello Boot Camp sessions will rotate through technique drills of all sorts: scales, arpeggios, 3rds, 6ths, as well as left hand, bowing, and vibrato exercises. Basics will be reviewed and advanced techniques will be tackled!  In addition to games and other opportunities for cello fun, each day will conclude with a cello choir reading session. Summer Cello Boot Camp, while challenging, will offer everyone opportunities to improve and to bond with fellow cello enthusiasts in a friendly and supportive environment.

Skill Level: Intermediate and above, able to play several two-octave scales and be acquainted with thumb position.

Summer Musical Revue^

Teens and adults with a variety of developmental diagnoses and disabilities who want to be with others can practice and learn new social skills while sharing and making music together. The program includes musical games, instrumental improvisation, therapeutic singing, songwriting, and music exploration. Members of this group learn to communicate with others, follow directions, and express themselves non-verbally. Each member will have the opportunity to share songs, play instruments, and collaborate with others musically.

Suzuki Camp*

Ages:  At least 4 but less than 18

Students who are currently studying violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano, or harp in the Suzuki Method can join The Music Settlement Suzuki faculty and guest clinicians for a week of instruction, motivation, and fun!

Campers will participate in instrumental group classes, theory classes, and choir. Each camper will receive two 30- minute private lessons scheduled after camp hours during the week. Daily noon recitals will showcase our Suzuki faculty and camp students. Suzuki Camp begins with an orientation on Sunday, July 31st at 3:00pm where families will receive their weekly schedules, meet the counselors, and start the fun! Camp culminates with a grand finale concert on Saturday, August 6th at 10:00 am.

Extended Day and After Care are available, separate registration required.

Ukulele Boot Camp*

Learn to play the world's easiest stringed instrument in this three-day camp, led by Ukulele Magazine contributing editor Jim D'Ville. Campers will learn basic chords, strumming, and a by-ear approach to playing songs. Even if you have prior experience playing ukulele, this camp will move your playing forward with an emphasis on FUNdamentals. Ukuleles will be available to loan for the duration of this program.
