What's in Season? May - August 2021

What’s in Season?

Written by dietetic intern Rachel Dix

Every month of spring and summer brings new fruits and vegetables that are in season! There are many reasons to eat fruits and vegetables that are in season. One reason is that seasonal produce typically tastes better because they have been ripened and harvested at the peak time. Consuming produce in season can also be cheaper because farmers are able to harvest large amounts of the crop at once which lowers the price.

Produce harvested in season and locally is typically fresher and more vibrant because they haven’t been transported for long periods of time. Consuming seasonal produce is also environmentally friendly due to needing less transportation, refrigeration, and heating facilities to grow and keep out-of-season produce fresh. Lastly, eating seasonally and locally helps to support the local economy and community here in Cleveland!
