Does your school need a website?
Does your School (really) need a website?
School Administrators - you have heard the call to have your school's website up and running. What is holding you back? Do you think it is more hassle than it is worth? Do you think it will be a distraction for your staff with little or no benefit?
"...I am one of the biggest fan of the school website. This is a dream come true for us. We have gotten a lot of traction in terms of building relationship with students, families and community partners having a website that is current, connecting us to a level of "prestige" being able to have a social media/online presence. A good example is a non profit company in NY, that stumbled on us via our website and ended up taking a number of our students to a CAVS playoff." - Dr. Javier, Principal Lincoln-West
A static website that markets your school to potential families is the very least every school should have. When students and families are looking for a school they are starting online first. Students at the recent School Choice Fair have stated that they first knew about the school through the school website. It is clear this is a tool that is being used to make a school choice. This is your chance to put your best foot forward and really describe your Academic Curriculum and Services. This is really what makes CMSD special, the amount of services and educational opportunities available to our scholars.
For your current families, at the very least you should have a list of current Faculty with their email addresses. Parent -Teacher communication is key to progress. I know I don't need to tell you this, but having an open reliable channel of communication can solidify that partnership. The more current information we can put on a website the more parents can rely on the website as an information portal into the school.They will start looking for current events, news, and announcements. Then you are building community-a sense of connection to the school. I didn't even add social media into the mix to further engage your families.
Let's look at some numbers from January 2016:
High Schools | Elementary Schools | ||
---|---|---|---|
Max S. Hayes
|
1257 Visitors | Riverside | 688 |
Ginn Academy | 1080 | Almira | 683 |
CSSM | 1076 | AJ Rickoff | 411 |
Lincoln-West | 788 | Newton D. Baker | 369 |
James Ford Rhodes | 664 | ||
John Adams | 650 | ||
CHSDA | 642 | ||
CSAD | 533 |
As you can see from these numbers - people are engaging these schools. Whether they are looking for a new school or looking for a teacher or an event, they are turning to the SCHOOL website. So, if you are still hesitating on building a website and owning it as a vital communication tool, then you have nothing to lose but interested students and families.
