Thanks to the support of the Ohio Arts Council, the CMSD will continue to partner with multi-disciplinary teaching artist, producer, and director, Sheela Das, during the 2022-23 school year through the TeachArtsOhio program. Sheela has an extensive career in arts education and performance including developing and delivering a Kennedy Center for the Arts residency program in collaboration with international director and producer, artist Todd Rundgren. Sheela is the founder and artistic director of Creative Concepts in Music whose mission is to promote peace, sustainability and community engagement in the arts. Her body of work includes hundreds of public performances and over 300 educational teaching songs for English Language Learners.
"Teaching through the Arts" at Natividad Pagán International Newcomers Academy provides artistic workshops in grades 1-8 designed to enhance student literacy skills through the creation of art, original stories, and instrumental music and curricular songs. Student performance skills are developed throughout the residency. Lessons align with content standards for English Language Arts, Music, Drama, Science, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Profile of a Graduate. The whole school community PreK-12, families, and community partners share in artistic workshops and performances at the school both live and online.
"Songwriting Transforms" at Luis Muñoz Marín serves students in grades 2-8 with in-person workshops to improve language and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Students learn to find their voices and experience personal development through lyric writing, and performance education. All activities align with Ohio Department of Education content standards in English Language Arts and SEL. Residency products include video-recorded music, teacher professional development, community video sharing events and a family songwriting workshop.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is thankful for the support of the Ohio Arts Council!
