2023-2024 Principal's Welcome Letter
Dear Garfield Families and Students,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! I’m beyond thrilled to welcome our new and returning students to an exciting upcoming year at Garfield School. This year, I’m looking forward to continuing our strong family involvement that was so pivotal to our school community prior to the start of Covid. We’re eager to invite our families to monthly events that will include Coffee and Appetizers with the Principal, Career Days, Kids Night Out, Family Paint Nights, Parent Relaxation Nights, Award Ceremonies, Holiday Concerts and more. At Garfield, I truly appreciate the parent, family and community involvement that makes Garfield the phenomenal school that it truly is today.
This year, I’m proud to announce that Garfield will become a national Verizon Learning Innovative School. This program will provide all middle school students with a free 5G-enabled iPad for students to continue their learning while away from the classroom. Our partnership with Food Strong and the Center for Arts Inspired Learning will continue to bring choice to our middle school students, including culinary arts, high school art, dance and more. This year, our Say Yes After School program will be expanded to our younger grades, allowing all grade levels to participate in extracurriculars while promoting high-quality afterschool learning. I’m grateful to be continuing our highly successful gifted programs in grades 3rd-6th while offering honors classes in 7th and high school classes in 8th grade. Our 8th graders will have the option to be promoted from Garfield with 3.5 high school credits in Algebra I, ELA I, Physical Science and High School Art.
Reflecting on last school year, I’m tremendously proud of our students, teachers, staff, and families. Based on our 2021-2022 state test scores, Garfield experienced double digit growth in Math and grew our ELA scores four times more than the state of Ohio. Our 8th grade Algebra I class outperformed the state by 20% and Mrs. Reffner’s 3rd graders achieved 100% in ELA and 100% in math. Every single classroom teacher at Garfield experienced growth from the previous school year, with some teachers increasing scores by more than 30%. With your continued support, we’ll continue this academic momentum into the next school year.
Thank you!
