• Hello Hannah Gibbons Families,

It is hard to believe that we have already kicked off our 3rd quarter.  The year is flying by and I am proud to be able to call Hannah Gibbons my home.  We have a lot of exciting things going on at HG and I am glad to share them with you.  January 18 will be the kickoff of our Robotics Club, we are one of the select few schools that were chosen for this opportunity.  The scholars that applied and were accepted have been notified.  We have also kicked off Boys Scouts for our scholars in grades 1-5, which will take place every Wednesday from 3:30pm – 4:30pm.  We were also the recipient of a 1.4 million dollar grant that we hope will have a tremendous impact on our student achievement for the 2017-2018 school year.  The grant is going to allow us to hire a full-time Reading Specialist that will be able to focus on reading for scholars in grades K-3, as we know that those are the foundational grades where reading development is crucial.  The grant will also allow us to start an after-school program next year to provide additional academic support for our scholars.

We have big things on the horizon as well.  We have less than 40 days until the Ohio State Test for English Language Arts and less than 60 days until the Ohio State Test for Mathematics.  It is important that every child attend school every day, unless they are ill.  When scholars miss school, they are missing valuable opportunities to continue to learn new skills, as well as to fine too their current skillset. Currently, 14.7% of our 260 scholars have missed more than 10 days of school. We know that students who miss more than 10 days of school are 9% less likely to pass the 3rd grade Reading Guarantee, are likely to score 12 points lower on Reading assessments than their classmates and peers, and they are likely to score 15 points lower on Math assessments than their classmates  and peers.

As always, I thank you for choosing Hannah Gibbons STEM School to educate your child(ren). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Gregory.adkins@clevelandmetroschools.org or 216.838.0750.

    Educationally,

    Greg Adkins
