Located in Cleveland's historic Ohio City neighborhood, Orchard STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) School provides students with equal opportunity for innovation, engineering and design principles through authentic problem-based learning units in all subject areas.
This is the third year for the awards, a partnership between the George Gund and Cleveland foundations, the District and the Cleveland Teachers Union. The goal is to spread best practices by honoring teachers who set a standard of excellence and serve as an example for their peers.
Shoes and Clothes for Kids has rewarded CMSD’s Ohio Teacher of the Year finalist with a 3-minute shopping spree at the organization’s Resource Center. Catherine Duplisea gathered 364 items -- $2,500 worth of supplies -- for her school, Orchard STEM.
Ten award-winning CMSD teachers are reaping well-deserved congratulations. They also are planning ways to share their methods with peers across the District.
Cleveland has been become the fourth chapter of Say Yes to Education, a historic development that will bring college scholarships to CMSD students while also providing services designed to keep them on track to graduation.
The CMSD News Bureau asked the winners for their teaching philosophies, what about their practices they will share with peers and how they will share it, what drew them to CMSD and urban education and who served as their role models. Here are excerpts from their responses.
