Cleveland's Early College high school is highest-scoring school in region on state report cards

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The highest-scoring school in Northeast Ohio on state tests isn’t in Solon or Beachwood or some other well-off suburb.
It’s in the Cleveland school district.
The Early College high school on the John Hay campus of the Cleveland schools had the sixth-highest Performance Index score out of more than 3,500 measured schools in Ohio on the just-released state report cards.

Cleveland’s Early College High School is one of three highly-rated schools that share the former John Hay High School campus off Carnegie Avenue near University Circle. Though Cleveland labels them “innovative” schools, all three are what are often known as “magnet” schools, which draw students from across the city and which each have entrance requirements. Early College requires new students to have at least a 3.5 grade-point average and to score as highly proficient or accelerated on state tests.
John Hay’s School of Science and Medicine ranked 97th out of all schools in Ohio by Performance Index and its School of Architecture and Design ranked 440th.
“We continue to be extremely proud of Early College high school,” said Christine Fowler-Mack, the district’s chief of innovative schools and programs. She praised the school for students and teachers having a mission of gaining spots in top colleges for graduates.
“It has a real purposeful atmosphere,” she said.
