Incoming freshman who attend this month’s “Take it to the MAX” Summer Camp at CMSD’s Max S. Hayes High School will get a healthy lunch each day, the chance to design their own model car and learn about the new world of high school.
But here’s the real bonus: If they complete the course successfully, they will earn a half-credit toward high school graduation.
“And another unique thing about our camp is that it’s free,” said José Estremeras, youth director at WIRE-Net, a manufacturing advocacy group that acts as the District’s partner at Max Hayes. “This is a great chance for students to find out more about this school, both boys and girls, to learn something and to get that half-credit toward their graduation.”
The camp begins Monday and runs through June 26. Interested students can call 216-634-8684 or go to NewMaxHayes.com
Estremera recruited students recently after the eighth-grade promotion ceremony at Anton Grdina K-8 School. He repeatedly told parents and students about what Max Hayes has to offer, about the upcoming camp and about the new Max Hayes High under construction at West 65th Street and Clark Avenue. The new school is scheduled to open in 2015.
“There’s a lot going on for people to be excited about,” he said. “The camp is the one coming up first, and we’re almost full at the ninth grade already, but we’re always glad to tell people about what’s happening at Max Hayes.”
Students who attend the Take it to the MAX camp will take on a project that Scouts may be familiar: building a model car.
“We start the camp off by giving the students a block of wood, four tires and four nails and tell them that they're going to be making a car out of it before the end of the camp,” Estremera said. “But they’ll work on computers, too, to generate a 3-D model of the car, and then we’ll race them at the end.”
