Agreement will clear way for new Campus International

CMSD and Cleveland State University have reached an agreement that will clear the way for building a new home for the Campus International School at CSU.

Under the “shared responsibility agreement,” CMSD will lease nearly 2 acres at East 21st Street and Payne for 50 years and build a new 720-seat school for preschool through eighth grade.

The agreement also covers CSU’s Cole Center, which will eventually become a Campus International high school, and two floors of classrooms in Rhodes Tower already used by juniors and seniors from MC²STEM High School. CMSD will lease each of those spaces for 10 years with a series of renewals that could extend the terms by up to 40 years.

CMSD will pay the university $44,000 a year to rent the land for the new school. The District also will pay for utility service at the Cole Center because the high school will be the only tenant.

The CSU trustees approved the agreement Wednesday. The Board of Education will vote Tuesday.

Campus International, which opened in 2010, now serves kindergarten through sixth grade and will add seventh grade in the fall.

The school is presently spread across two sites – the Cole Center and space rented in a church complex at East 30th Street and Chester Avenue. The Cole Center will become a high school after CMSD builds the new PreK-8 school on Payne Avenue. 

Campus International gained accreditation last year from the International Baccalaureate organization. The school teaches students to be global citizens, which includes instruction in Mandarin Chinese.

The school serves as a training ground and research center for CSU student teachers and faculty. A fifth of the seats are reserved for children whose parents are CSU employees or full-time students.

Campus International is so popular that seats were filled by lottery this year and there is a long waiting list. The school currently has about 450 students and expects to grow by about 100 in the fall.
The cost of the new school is estimated at $22 million. The majority of the funding will come from the state. The District's share will include $4 million from sale of the former downtown Board of Education building to the operators of the Drury Plaza hotel chain.
