    • Gorillas in the Wild. Have students research the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat and investigate what they can do to help the gorilla population worldwide. Go to www.gorillas.org to find ways to help your family learn about efforts to protect gorillas from the kind of hunter who killed Ivan’s parents.
    • Our Family Tree. Have children use PBS/Nova’s interactive family tree to make a chart of the characteristics of hominid primates (go to www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova; click on “Evolution,” then on “Interactive,” then on “Our Family Tree”). Find as many resources as possible for information about the gorilla and its habits and habitats, and compare them to the character of Ivan.

    • Birds of a Different Feather. Give family members the task of finding stories about unlikely friendships among different species of animals (Think Charlotte’s Web). What are the strangest pairings your students can find? There are several fine books, many photos on the Internet, and even videos on Youtube that showcase these unusual animal friendships. How many can you and your students discover?
    • Cover Art-what do you think of the cover of the book? Re-design the cover of the book as if you were the illustrator. Make sure to include the Title and author on the design of your cover.

    Family Activities:

    • Make a climbing gorilla.
    • Throughout the book, there was a lot of talk about zoos. In fact, Ruby and Ivan both ended up in a one. For this project choice, you are asked to design the layout of the zoo that Ivan and Ruby were brought to. You can use any size paper you wish. Use the details from the book to help you design your zoo. Be sure to include a name of your zoo. Share a pic of your zoo on Facebook. #AdlaiIvan #myzoo
    • Ashley Hicks is a zookeeper at Cosley Zoo in Wheaton, IL. Here, she talks about all the things a zoo does to keep animals happy and healthy, unlike the ways the animals were treated in TheOne and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

    • Stella has a really good memory and they talk about improving Ivan's memory.  Make a Memory Match Game using  a Piece of paper, scissors and a pencil.  First - Fold the paper into sections (8 for younger grade, 16 for upper grades).  Cut the paper on the fold lines.  Draw 2 of the same picture on each square (for little kids Draw, Ivan, Stella, Bob and Mack, Big kids also draw those 4 twice, then draw them twice again in a different pose).   You can also just write the names on the squares if that's easier.  Place them all face down and each player uncovers 2 each turn to see if they get a match.  Continue playing till all of the matches are made. (pg 53)
    • How to draw a gorilla.
    • Famous artists-Art and drawing played an important role in the book. Your task here is to research a famous artists and share some interesting facts about them. You can also draw one of the artist’s famous pieces- of course using the opposite hand that you normally would draw with and post a video to Facebook with your findings. #AdlaiIvan #famousartist
