We have a new name! Starting in the 2022-2023 school year, our new school name is Mary Church Terrell. Mary Church Terrell was a well-known African American activist who championed racial equality and women's suffrage. She graduated from Oberlin College where she earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree. After college, she spent two years teaching at Wilburforce College before moving to Washington D.C. to teach at M Street Colored High School. Terrell became the president of the NACW (National Association of Colored Women) and campaigned tirelessly for women's suffrage and civil rights. She fought for these because she realized she belonged "to the only group in this country that has two such huge obstacles to surmount.. both sex and race"
We are so honored to have our school named after such an important woman in history and are looking forward to educating our students, staff and community about Mary Church Terrell. We had our offical ribbon cutting ceremony for our new name on September 13, 2022. Please see the above photo gallery of our special event.
