CW43 WUAB will partner with CMSD and the Cleveland Teachers Union to present televised lessons for students whose schools have been closed due to the Coronavirus.

“CMSD on CW43” will premiere Monday, April 20, and air from 9-10 a.m. Monday through Friday. Teachers representing different grade bands will be featured each day, starting with preschool through second grade. (See schedule below.)

The program will add to the various ways that the District is engaging students.

Strategies include mailing material to homes, posting it online and distributing technology, but many Cleveland families lack access to reliable high-speed Internet service. CEO Eric Gordon has called on policymakers to treat Internet access like a utility instead of a luxury.

“What’s exciting about using television is it can reach almost any student and family,” he said. “We are really excited about this content and looking forward to kicking off this partnership.”

"Distance learning via computers has been a great option for safely keeping students on track." CW43 WUAB General Manager Erik Schrader said. "But we identified a need for students who may not have access to a home computer or laptop.

“We're fortunate to have organizations like CMSD and the Cleveland Teachers Union ready to embrace a daunting challenge like this. Every broadcaster has a responsibility to help their community in a time of crisis. We're proud to be a part of it."

Teachers participating in “CMSD on CW43” will include winners of the Excellence in Teaching Award, created in 2016 to honor teachers who set a standard of excellence and can inspire their peers.

Excellence in Teaching is a partnership between the George Gund and Cleveland foundations, the teachers union and CMSD. This year's nomination and application process has been postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Grade-specific lessons featured on “CMSD on CW43” will air each weekday according to the following schedule:

  • Monday: Kindergarten-Grade 2
  • Tuesday: Grades 3-5
  • Wednesday: Grades 6-8
  • Thursday: High School
  • Friday: Life Skills, all grades
