CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Congressman Louis Stokes still has an emotional attachment to the school that bears his name, but says he understands the Cleveland school district’s decision to move students out of it this year.

The district shifted students out of the Carl and Louis Stokes Central Academy on E. 40th Street at the start of this school year to the re-opened Alfred A. Benesch elementary school near E. 55th Street and Quincy Avenue.

Eric Gordon, the district’s chief executive officer, told the school board last week that he made the move because the school needs $250,000 in masonry work.
