  • Safety and security promotes officers, welcomes new deputy chief

    12/20/2016 -- The CMSD Division of Safety and Security has welcomed a new deputy chief to its ranks and promoted several officers to leadership positions. The role of deputy chief, left open by a retirement, will be filled by Dennis Hill, who worked in the Cleveland Police Department for nearly 29 years, most recently as commander of the Fifth District.

  • Facing History students face sharks (photo gallery)

    12/16/2016 -- Some ninth-graders from Facing History New Tech High Shool went before seven judges from the community on Wednesday, pitching prototypes in the high school’s twist on the hit television program “Shark Tank.” The exercise was part of a course that combines history with graphic design. In this instance, the hybrid crossed content about America’s Industrial Revolution and use of skills on a 3-D printer.

  • Partners pledge support for aerospace, maritime school

    12/14/2016 -- CMSD’s new Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School will introduce students to those two industries, and the industries are prepared to welcome them with open arms. Big-name community partners enthusiastically pledged their support Tuesday when the school was officially announced by the District and PHASTAR, a nonprofit organization that has spent five years researching and refining the concept.

  • Midyear graduation rewards persistent students

    12/14/2016 -- CMSD will hold a midyear graduation ceremony Friday, rewarding 41 students who persevered beyond four years to fulfill requirements and pass state exams. The graduation, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the East Professional Center, will become an annual rite and provide an incentive for students to keep working.

  • Art museum donates 'Create It Kits' to third-graders

    12/7/2016 -- Nearly 13,000 kits will be distributed to third-graders at 130 public, charter and parochial schools in Cleveland, 30 school districts and 53 private and parochial schools in Cuyahoga County. The United Way of Greater Cleveland, the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County are also partners in the initiative.

  • CMSD plans 6 new high school models

    12/6/2016 -- CMSD will launch six new high schools next fall as part of a continuing effort to help students find the right fit and better prepare for college and careers. The six schools are actually new small, more personalized models that will be mostly placed in existing buildings and lead to the phasing out of older programs.

  • Applications for charter partnerships due Dec. 20

    12/6/2016 -- The Cleveland Plan, a customized blueprint for education reform in the city, calls for giving all students and families access to quality education, regardless of the provider. Under the plan, which is part of state law, a partnership is created when the Cleveland Board of Education agrees to sponsor a charter school or the District and charter endorse each other’s programs.
