CMSD and the community gathered Friday for a ribbon cutting at the new Whitney M. Young School on Harvard Ave.

District CEO Eric Gordon joined students, staff, Councilman Joe Jones, State Rep. Juanita Brent and school board member Denise Link for a ceremony in the school gym. Speakers emphasized that the building, which students moved into earlier this year, represents an investment in children.

"This building says we care," Princinpal Ivy Wheeler said.

The building is part of a continuing modernization program paid for with state funds and proceeds from a local bond issue. Since 2002, CMSD has constructed or fully renovated nearly 50 schools.

The new Whitney Young features large, interactive touch screens in every classroom and community, or “extended,” learning areas where children can work on projects in teams. Furniture is comfortable and can be arranged for group work.

The building supports the school's new instructional strategy, known as personalized learning technology. Students use a project-based approach to pose, research and answer their own questions.
