Students at Almira PreK-8 Academy have transformed a white wall in one of the first-floor hallways into gorgeous mural that focuses on kindness.
The mural depicts a bright yellow and orange sunset and ocean waves in shades of blue with the word “kind” painted across the scene.
“I think the comment I get the most is when people walk past this mural and see how bright and happy it is,” said Mariya Tatarin, an art teacher at Almira. “It really calms them down because of the association of the waves, the ocean and the sunset. It is so calming.”
The sun replaces the letter “I” in kind. Anyone who stands under the sun forms the letter in a sentence that reads: “Be the ‘I’ in Kind.”
Principal James Greene proposed the mural. Students came up with sayings painted inside the letters.
“I wrote, ‘The world is full of kind people. If you can’t find one, be one,’” said Maria, an eighth grader.
Coming up with the phrases was important because it allowed the students to think about what kindness means to them.
“It allowed students to really think about how they show kindness and how they want kindness shown to them,” said Tatarin.
