Dear Dike School of the Arts Families and Staff:

As you know, the Dike School of the Arts has been operating under temporary safety measures while a contractor installs a new fire alarm system.

Unfortunately, a delay in shipping parts has caused the project to take longer than expected, and continuing the temporary measures is not practical. For that reason, CMSD, working with the Cleveland Fire Department, has adopted an alternative plan to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Effective Tuesday, November 15th, students in kindergarten through eighth grade will attend classes at the former Case School, 4050 Superior Ave., until a new fire system is fully installed and operating at Dike School. Preschool will remain in its temporary location at Marion-Sterling School.

Students who currently receive transportation to Dike will receive transportation to Case, with pickup and drop-off times remaining the same. Students who do not currently receive transportation to Dike will receive shuttle service from Dike to Case and back, with the shuttle leaving for Case at 9 a.m. and returning about 4:20 p.m.

Students’ last day at Dike School will be Wednesday, November 9th. Students will not have school on Thursday, November 10th or Monday, November 14th to allow teachers and staff to pack and move their materials to Case School.  All CMSD schools are closed on Friday, November 11th in observance of Veterans Day. Other days between now and Nov. 15 are either regular scheduled off days for students or days when classes are canceled at Dike so teachers can pack or unpack supplies. There will be no remote learning during this period.

    The calendar is as follows:
    • Tuesday, November 8th: Election Day. Regularly scheduled Professional Development Day for CMSD teachers. No classes for District students.
    • Wednesday, November 9th: Students attend classes at Dike.
    • Thursday, November 10th: Teachers pack for move to Case. No classes or remote learning for Dike students.
    • Friday, November 11th: Veterans Day. All CMSD schools and other facilities closed for the holiday.
    • Monday, November 14th: Teachers unpack at Case. No classes or remote learning for Dike students.
    • Tuesday, November 15th: Classes begin at Case.

In fact, the Board of Education voted back in February to budget for performing the work in the fiscal year that began July 1, and a contract for the project was finalized in August. Inspections or fire drills found that the system was functioning properly as recently as Sept. 1.

When a malfunction was discovered on Sept. 28 during preparations for a fire drill, we immediately contacted the Cleveland fire marshal. Within 48 hours, we began implementing temporary safeguards, including stationing two members of the Fire Department in the building full time and equipping every classroom with two-way radios.

Thank you for your patience as we finish this project and ensure that the Dike School of the Arts is equipped with a new fire alarm system that helps keep students and staff safe.

    Sincerely,

    Anne Premier
    Principal
