Charters can apply for CMSD sponsorship

CMSD is accepting applications from charter schools that want to be sponsored by the District.

Charter operators that are seeking to create new school models or replicate existing models have until Aug. 1 to notify the District of intent to apply for sponsorship and have until Aug. 31 to submit applications. Charter schools that are interested in switching from another sponsor to CMSD can apply throughout the year but are encouraged to contact the District's Charter Office before doing so.

The Cleveland Plan, a state-approved blueprint for education reform in the city, calls for students to receive the best possible education, regardless of the provider. CMSD currently serves as the state-required sponsor, or authorizer, for 11 publicly funded but privately managed charter schools, monitoring their performance and supplying technical oversight.

Charter schools that are sponsored or partner with CMSD share a portion of proceeds from the levy that allows the District to carry out the reforms in The Cleveland Plan. CMSD is the only District in Ohio and one of the few in the country that share tax money with charters.

CMSD and charters have jointly formed the Cleveland Education Compact to address issues of mutual concern. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided money for the collaboration.
