Campus International's new "upper school" is a continuation of Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s highly regarded K-8 Campus International School, a collaboration between CMSD and Cleveland State University awarded in 2016 with the Council of Great City Schools’ Shirley S. Schwartz Urban Impact Award, which recognizes outstanding partnerships between universities and urban school districts. The Cleveland State partnership, as well as others with corporations and globally-minded organizations and institutions in northeast Ohio and statewide, provide a basis to offer students 21st-century experiential learning experiences that will prepare them for college and careers in a rapidly globalizing world.
Throughout the 2016-17 school year, stakeholders from the lower school, the university, and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District communities came together to develop guiding principles and a portrait of a graduate for the new upper school, utilizing a planning framework practiced over the past several years through CMSD's Portfolio Network as part of the district's
Cleveland Plan. This work provided a strong foundation for the beginning of the new upper school program that opened August 2017.
Like its feeder program, Campus International's upper school embraces the International Baccalaureate model and has become a fully authorized Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) IB World School (authorization in 2019). Through an emphasis on international-mindedness as exhibited through the 10 attributes of its “learner profile”, IB provides a framework for a school culture that supports the development of every learner to become self-directed, productive members of our internationally interconnected and ever-changing world. Campus International is committed to providing broad access to this rigorous college-preparatory curriculum by scaffolding learning throughout the four years of high school and creating a personalized environment where every staff member contributes to every student’s academic and socio-emotional development through a robust IB Core program.
Campus International School's upper campus opened with its inaugural class of 9th graders in 2017-18 and reached its full capacity in 2020-21.
