    Tremont Montessori Vision Statement:

    Tremont Montessori School (TMS) strives to be an exemplary Public Montessori School. In order to achieve this vision, we have articulated the goal of earning accreditation from the American Montessori Society (AMS).

    Montessori Virtues:

    Tremont Montessori School (TMS) is guided by the developmental needs and sensitivities of the child and dedicated to building a culture of peace and justice. Helping children develop and practice the understanding, skills and capacities of peace is a key academic subject at our school. The principles of peace are critical for helping children develop their own intrinsic motivations for responding to conflict without aggression and to developing their sense of personal agency. It requires all of us—students, educators, staff, and parents—to recognize and support our PRIDE virtues and the 5 fundamental PBS principles. We also must teach and model the Peace Literacy Institute’s peace literacy concepts and implement Nautilus, a Montessori-based approach for student behavior support.

    Our 5 Proactive Behavioral Support Principles are:

    1. We all want to do well.

    2. We all have both physical and non-physical needs. 

    3. Challenging behavior occurs when the expectations and demands of the environment collide with lagging skills. The behavior is the signal of the collision.

    4. Aggression is a signal of distress.

    5. Peace literacy is a form of social-emotional learning and is as essential to develop as reading and math.

Tremont Montessori Peace Pledge 

We recite this pledge daily during our morning announcements as a reminder that Tremont Montessori students and staff are committed to cultivating peace, a challenging task in our current society. 

I promise to do my best to respect myself and others, listen carefully when others speak, 

respect others’,  

use self-control, 

challenge violence in all of its forms, 

not hold grudges, 

spread peace at school, at home, 

and in the community.  

This concept map below embodies the important aspects of peace literacy.  At Tremont Montessori we teach some of the understandings (i.e., the non-physical fundamental needs) and skills as part of our SEL curriculum in order to build the capacity of our students for peace in action.
