Environmental Education with the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes @ Stonebrook-White
Scholars look forward to their in-person science classes with Environmental Educators from the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. One student was heard to say, "You always bring the best stuff to do." Over the course of this year, preschool and kindergarten classes have 12 natural science lessons, and the fourth and fifth graders have 20 hands-on science classes. Fourth grade has been focusing on different cycles of the Earth, from water to rocks, as well as learning about watersheds, the importance of water quality, and our drinking water that we receive from Lake Erie. Fifth grade has been focusing on the study of seasonal changes around us and how they influence changes in plants and animals. For all classes, science lessons include teamwork with experiments and engineering and designing challenges.Musician-in-Residence with In Harmony Therapeutic Services @ Stonebrook-White
Stonebrook-White Montessori Campus received a TeachArtsOhio grant from the Ohio Arts Council to host In Harmony Therapeutic Services for two 6-week classroom-based learning experiences. In Harmony educators will engage children ages 3-6 in a Rock n’ Read music and literacy program. Children in the 1st-3rd grades will build their math skills through Sticks! Building Math and Music Connections with Rhythm and Beat. This residency is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.
Peace Literacy Institute @ Stonebrook-White Montessori & Tremont Montessori
Since 2018, the Peace Literacy Institute (PLI) has been working with both Montessori schools to deepen their understanding of and ability to implement a trauma-informed Social Emotional Learning and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports framework that is aligned with the Montessori approach and mission. Over the last year PLI led workshops for educators and caregivers and developed videos that are freely available on their website. The essential message of Peace Literacy is that peace is not merely a goal, but also a set of skills needed to achieve that goal, a set of capacities that must be developed for those skills to be realized, and an accurate understanding of the human condition and the reality in which we live.Thank you to the Cleveland Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, and Saint Luke’s Foundation.
Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District Green Infrastructure Project @ Stonebrook-White
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) awarded a green infrastructure planning grant to MDP to develop a comprehensive stormwater runoff reduction plan for the Stonebrook/Lower Campus site. In collaboration with CMSD, Doan Brook Watershed Partnerships, and Famicos Foundation, MDP will facilitate work with a consultant to incorporate educational components into the design that tie into and support the Montessori approach. The planning process will also consider stormwater control measures for the White/Upper Campus site and connections to the community garden. The plan will enable MDP to apply for a construction grant in 2022.
We also thank Montessori Development Partnerships for grant writing and reporting support.
