How can we make toys more inclusive and accessible for children with disabilities?

About the project

All children, regardless of their abilities, deserve to experience the joy of play. In this meaningful project, students will have the opportunity to make a positive impact by adapting toys so that they can be used by children with disabilities. By modifying these toys, they will bring smiles and happiness to the lives of these children, fostering inclusivity and creating a world where everyone can play and thrive.

About the Partnership

The mission of RePlay for Kids is to increase the availability of toys and assistive devices for children with disabilities. They have worked with MC2STEM's robotics team over the past two years to teach teammates to solder toys, which were donated back to families in need.

Project Deliverables

Phase 1

Students will retrofit 2-3 sets of 15 toys in accordance with replay for kids provided instructions by adding switches or buttons that make the toys more accessible for children with limited dexterity. By completing these adaptations, students will learn the basic soldering skills, and gain an understanding of electrical circuits.

Phase 2

Replay For Kids is looking for ideas to improve their outcomes. Students will be challenged to design an enhancement to Replay For Kids' approach, enabling them to expand their reach and effectiveness.

Potential projects include but are not limited to:

- Designing a switch that can be pressed with a chin or shoulder for children with no lower arm movement
- Creating instructions to adapt a new toy to add to Replay For Kids' website
- Designing an adaptation for larger toys, such as video games, drones, or motorized vehicles in conjunction with the Go Baby Go program.
- Creating promotional materials describing the need for adapted toys

Phase 3

Students will be connected to a Northeast Ohio family in need of specialized toys for their child. Students will work with the family and professionals at Replay For Kids to design an adaptation to a toy or item that they have difficulties in using.
